Western Trunk Line Construction UpdateUpdated: 2.2.2026 The project is currently being prepared for a new bid, and a revised construction schedule is under development. We will share the updated schedule as soon as it becomes available. |
Project Description
The Western Trunk Line is a large diameter pipeline that delivers drinking water to residents in the South Los Angeles and Harbor communities.
As part of the Western Trunk Line Project, LADWP will replace approximately a four-mile segment of the existing 31-inch to 36-inch diameter pipeline installed between 1916 and 1947. The pipeline will be replaced with new 36-inch and 54-inch diameter earthquake resistant ductile iron pipe (ERDIP).
An increase in pipe size will improve flow capacity and operational flexibility, while the ERDIP design will provide greater earthquake resilience.
This project is an essential investment in water infrastructure that will ensure the delivery of reliable, high quality water to the local community.
Construction Information
Pipeline construction will be divided into small work areas to minimize construction impacts. Each work area will be up to 1,000-feet in length and 30-feet wide. A single traffic lane each way along Western Blvd. will be open during the construction. The crews will be working in each Work Area for approximately 3-4 months. Residents and businesses will be provided advance notice for the work area zones where parking will be restricted. Driveway access will be coordinated. There will be minimal water service interruptions.
