Solar Rooftops

What is Solar Rooftops?

Solar Rooftops is designed to expand access to solar participation for qualified LADWP residential customers who otherwise may not be able to participate in solar due to the high cost of installing panels. Participation in Solar Rooftops also enables customers to help LADWP modernize its grid and support the creation of a cleaner Los Angeles.

How It Works

1. Customer submits an application to join the program.
2. After application, LADWP inspects the home to:
   1. Confirm eligibility
   2. Ensure the roof can support a solar panel system
   3. Check for shading issues from nearby structures
       

System Design & Permits

After passing inspection, LADWP:

1. Designs the solar panel package.
2. Pulls a permit from the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety (LADBS).

Installation & Approval

LADWP installs the solar panel system (1–10 kW) and: 

1. LADBS inspects and approves the installation.
2. The system is connected to LADWP’s grid.

Energy & Payment

Customers receive fixed annual payments between $360–$900 depending on system size, for up to 20 years, totaling $7,200–$18,000.

LADWP owns the system and receives all energy generated.

Customers receive a check for rooftop use—regardless of how much solar energy is produced.

Program Eligibility

All LADWP residential customers in the service area with rate schedules R1-A, R1-B, R1-D, or R1-E may qualify. Homes must be owner-occupied and meet LADWP evaluations.
